Billy Fury was on the bill of the first concert/gig I ever attended, also on the bill were The Tornados (Fury's backing band), Marty Wilde, Karl Denver, Peter Jay & The Jaywalkers and a couple of others

Don't suppose Billy Fury played there did he?

Just listening to some of his stuff, what a great singer he was

Of course he died too young

Re: Billy Walker's Uppercut Club
I remember going a couple of times

The outstanding memory I have is a soul night with a host of big stars of the day including Sam & Dave amongst others

I was a naive teenager at the time with a couple of mates. They'd all gone to the bogs while I was browsing all the LP covers in the corridor outside

I hadn't realised it but I was actually standing directly opposite the dressing room door, when this gorgeous black lass with an American accent asked "Do you know the address of this place?"

I was totally taken back & stammered "Er, I know it's Forest Gate, it'll be E something!"

She said "Would you come to my dressing room and help me to look it up?"

At that point my mates came back out of the bogs & like an idiot I said "I'll have to get back to my mates, sorry"

My mates were gobsmacked "That was Carla Thomas you were just talking to!"

Sure enough she appeared on stage later

I was there also that night. It seems improbable that anybody can say they saw Hendrix perform live, let alone in Forest Gate. If I'd known it was your birthday I'd have given her a card for you!

I heard that he wrote Purple Haze in the dressing room when waiting to go on.
